Two Northeastern Lifters Capture Individual National Championship Honors, Team Places Fourth, at Collegiate National Competition.

The Northeastern University Powerlifting team, a member of the Iron Revolution, attended the 2010 USAPL Collegiate National Championships in Orlando, Florida this past weekend, the largest attended Nationals ever with 284 lifters from across the country.

The event started well for Northeastern when, it’s first competitor, Adam Matson found his way on the medal stand with a fifth place finish, Friday afternoon. The momentum continued on Saturday when Northeastern had five lifters take the platform. The team had a strong showing from Brad Blaisdell in the 165lbs class and Zac Cohen in the 181lbs class. The team’s three women all competed in the 148lbs class Saturday where Northeastern had its strongest showing of the weekend. Shaina Petit finished in 7th with the class’s heaviest bench of 192.8lbs. Anna Padilla pulled the most in the deadlift but was unsuccessful in her third attempt. Padilla was still able to medal finishing in 4th place. Heather Crocker had the best showing of the three as she took home 1st place, meaning Northeastern occupied 3 of the top 7 places in the women’s 148lb class. Crocker became Notheastern’s first National Champion in Powerlifting.

After a strong first two days of competition at Nationals Northeastern was looking to finish the weekend on a high note. On Sunday morning Scott Caplan, Eli Laipson-Williams, Luis Jaimes and Mike Roncarati all competed in the 220lbs. weight class. All four lifters posted monster improvements and in the end Jaimes placed 5th and Mike came in 3rd in the highly contested class.

In the final session on Sunday afternoon Northeastern had its two big guys lifting, Dan Mason in the 275’s and Joe Cappellino in the unlimited class. Dan had great meet that was capped with a 672lbs deadlift but finished just off the platform in sixth place. Finally Joe Cappellino stole the show with a record setting performance. Cappellino’s 661lbs bench press broke the National Collegiate and American Junior records by 110lbs. This press also broke the American Junior record that was held by Brian Siders who currently has the men’s open record at 777lbs. Joe’s 2,143.9lbs total was also good for the National Collegiate and American Junior Records as well. He finished the meet in first place, giving Northeastern its second National Champion of the meet.

Of the 12 lifters from Northeastern 6 walked away with medals and 2 of them earned National Championship gold. The men’s team finished the meet in fourth place which is a major feat in its self considering they didn’t even have enough lifters to fill out a full roster. This was the most successful Nationals Competition in the history of Powerlifting at Northeastern and the team looks forward to improving next year as they are only losing Adam Matson and Brad Blaisdell to graduation.
